Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Gorskii photographed the Russian Empire under Tsar Nicolas II between 1909 – 1912. A selection of his photographs are posted on the The Big Picture of Boston Globe’s web site. The effects (color, etc.) are the result of a camera that allowed Gorskii to photograph three images in a row (each one with a red, or blue, or green filter). Each frame was a black and white image, but when lit (or projected) with correct light, would allow the scene in color. Here are some of my favorite images from the internet.

Robert Walser

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I have just been reading “Selected Stories” by Robert Walser. The writing is so unique and inspiringly different. The characters are lonely, but not unhappy. The loneliness is beauty, not despair. So far, my favorite story is “Kleist in Thun.” I got turned onto the book when researching the Brother’s Quay. Walser is listed as one of their inspirations.

Jonsi GO concert at Terminal 5

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

A shot from the Jonsi GO concert last Sunday at Terminal 5 in New York City. Check it out if you’re in Europe this summer. Its amazing and inspiring.

Included in this post are stills taken with my blackberry of the stage and projections during the show. The set design is done by 59 Productions out of the UK. The concept for the stage show is derived from Jonsi’s animal inspired music and the charred remains of the famous Deyrolle shop in Paris a couple of years ago. Click here to read more about the fire. Click here for a video about the production process.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century — at MoMA

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Martine’s Legs, 1968 by Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century is on exhibit at the MoMA through June 28th. If you are in NYC, you must see it. Not only does the exhibition have beautiful vintage prints of familiar “decisive moment” images, but it includes Cartier-Bresson’s photo essays of China, the US and the USSR. These groups of photographs hang above display cases that contain the magazines in which the photographs originally appeared. The Modern Century blends the old worlds and new worlds of Cartier-Bresson’s career — both of which are windows into worlds that no longer exist. A few of my favorite photographs are included here…
